Today in Rock History – January 23

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s January 23rd and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day in 1988, as a trio of misfit musicians from Seattle entered the studio of producer Jack Endino to record their ten-song demo. Their demo was so successful that Sub Pop Records signed the group and put out their first single, a cover of Shocking Blue’s Love Buzz. The band would take over the world just a few years later and became known as Nirvana.

Since we’re talking about records, let’s move into releases now. First up, we have Bon Jovi’s self-titled debut record from 1984!

Other releases include: Station to Station by David Bowie in 1976, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not from the Arctic Monkeys in 2006, Blood Stained Love Story by Saliva in 2007 and Kiss Me Deadly from Billy Idol’s Generation X in 1981!

With birthdays, we have Danny Federici of the E Street Band and Robin Zander of Cheap Trick!

We lost Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1990 at the age of 37 from chronic pneumonia as a result of paralysis suffered in a drunk driving accident.

And finally in 1991, while celebrating a format change to classic rock for his Albuquerque radio station KLSK FM, owner and GM John Sebastian played Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven on repeat for 24 hours straight. After a listener reported that the DJ had apparently suffered a heart attack and another claiming that the station had been taken over by terrorist dispatched by Saddam Hussein (this was just days after the beginning of the Gulf War), police showed up to the station with guns drawn.
