Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s January 14th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
Beginning the day in 1966, a young David Jones decides to change his stage name on his new single Can’t Help Thinking About Me in order to avoid confusion with Monkees singer Davy Jones. The young singers new name? David Bowie.
And we’re not done with Bowie today, as in 1977, we saw the release of the first album of his Berlin Trilogy with Brian Eno: Low.
Other releases, we have John Fogerty’s Centerfield in 1985 and Permanent Waves from Rush in 1980!
Birthdays today features Dave Grohl of Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, and Foo Fighters!
Other birthdays include Geoff Tate of Queensryche and Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society!
In 2005, a statue honoring late Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone was unveiled at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery by Ramone’s widow Linda.
We lost Jerry Nolan of the New York Dolls in 1992 at the age of 45 from a stroke.
And finally in 1978, the Sex Pistols played what would be their final ever show with their iconic lineup, taking place at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The show ended with the Pistols covering the Stooges song No Fun and as the final cymbal rang out, singer Johnny Rotten said to the crowd: “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” before saying good night. The band would get together again in 1996 for a reunion show sans bassist Sid Vicious who died in 1979.
