Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s January 4th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
Starting the day on a sadder note as we lost Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy in 1986 from sepsis-induced pneumonia and heart failure following a drug overdose in December. He was just 36.
We also lost Ray Thomas of Moody Blues in 2018 at the age of 76 and Gerry Rafferty of Stealers Wheel in 2011 at the age of 63.
In 1970, Keith Moon of The Who accidentally ran over and killed his chauffeur, Neil Boland, while apparently trying to escape from a group of skinheads.
Nirvana signed with Geffen Records in 1991 and in September of that year, their breakout record Nevermind would be released.
The Doors released their self-titled debut record in 1967!
In 1968, Leo Fender sold the Fender Guitars brand to CBS for $13m
Moving into birthdays now, we have Michael Stipe of R.E.M.!
Other birthdays include: Bernard Sumner of Joy Division and New Order, Peter Steele of Type-O Negative, Jeph Howard of The Used, Nels Cline of Wilco, and Till Lindemann of Rammstein!
In 2013, Rob Caggiano, the longtime lead guitarist of thrash metal band Anthrax, announced his departure from the band.
And finally in 1970, The Beatles, without John Lennon, stepped into the studio for the final time together to record overdubs for the McCartney penned Let It Be. This would mark a bittersweet end of an era.
