Today in Rock History – December 28

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s December 28th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day on a sadder note, we lost The Rev of Avenged Sevenfold in 2009 at the age of 28 from an accidental overdose from prescription drugs and alcohol.

We also lost Lemmy of Motorhead in 2015 from an aggressive type of cancer, just a few days after his 70th birthday.

And in a tragic twist of fate, Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson drowned in the Pacific Ocean in 1983 while out trying to recover items he lost at sea three years prior. He was the only surfer in the band and was giving a burial at sea with the help of President Ronald Reagan.

In a 2003 interview with a London newspaper, Pete Townshend of The Who had considered suicide after an arrest a year prior on child pornography charges. Townshend claimed that he was only visiting these sites as research for a book dealing with his own childhood sexual abuse.

With birthdays today, we have Matt Walst of Three Days Grace!

Other birthdays include Hugh McDonald of Bon Jovi and Edgar Winter of the Edgar Winter Group!

In 1975, at a concert in Spokane, WA, Ted Nugent was almost shot by a fan when the man pulled out a .44 Magnum. Luckily the fan was wrestled to the ground by security before any shots were fired.

And finally in 1968, the three day Miami Pop festival began at Gulfstream Park! The festival was marked as the first major rock festival on the East Coast and featured an impressive lineup: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Chuck Berry, Fleetwood Mac among other major players at the time!
