Today in Rock History – December 26

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s December 26th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day with birthdays, we have James Hetfield’s best friend, Lars Ulrich of Metallica

Other birthdays include: Chris Daughtry, Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides and J Yuenger of White Zombie!

We saw the theatrical release of the rockumentary film Monterey Pop as it chronicled the 1967 Monterey International Pop Music Festival. The festival would become a part of rock legend as the first time The Who smashed their gear in America and Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire.

That’s not the only rock film that came out on this day as we also got The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour in 1967 and the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy in 2009.

In 1968, Led Zeppelin began their first ever US tour in Denver, opening for Vanilla Fudge.

We lost Jim Burns, the co-creator of MTV Unplugged in 2017 at the age of 65. He died from his injuries caused by a car accident, as three days earlier he was struck by a taxi cab in New York while crossing Fifth Avenue with his seeing-eye dog.

And finally in 1986, the Beastie Boys began their Licensed To Ill tour with a show at The Ritz in NYC. The tour and album would help the band skyrocket to new heights and thousands of Volkswagen emblems would suddenly disappear over night as fans would steal the emblems to emulate Mike D’s signature look.
