Today in Rock History – October 17th

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s October 17th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day with releases, in 1977 we got Skynyrd’s Street Survivors. This would be the final album with frontman Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines, as three days later they would be killed in a plane crash

Other releases include The Tragically Hip’s World Container in 2006 and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water from Limp Bizkit in 2000.

Speaking of The Hip, it’s a day of mourning in Canada as in 2017, we lost Gord Downie to glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

In 1990, a young Billie Joe Armstrong dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music. I think it turned out pretty well for him so far.

And finally in 2012, Celebration Day, a dual Led Zeppelin concert film/live album was released. Featuring footage from the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute concert at the O2 Arena in London, it was the first and only reunion performance from all three living members since the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980.
