Today in Rock History – September 21

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s September 21st and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day off as we normally do with releases and it’s a great day for them! Not only did we get Green Day’s magnum opus American Idiot in 2004,

We ALSO got Nirvana’s final album In Utero in 1993!

Other releases included Phish’s Lawn Boy in 1990, Dream Police from Cheap Trick in 1979, and both Euphoria Morning by Chris Cornell and The Fragile from Nine Inch Nails in 1999!

And in 1992, Radiohead released their debut single Creep. A song the band despises, but the rest of the world seemed to like. It appeared on their first album Pablo Honey the following year.

We lost Boz Burrell of King Crimson and Bad Company in 2006 at the age of 60 from a heart attack.

In 2011, R.E.M. announced that they would be breaking up amicably and ending their musical careers.

Moving on to birthdays, we have Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor of Motorhead

Other birthdays include David Silveria of Korn, Liam Gallagher of Oasis, Don Preston of The Mothers of Invention and Don Felder of the Eagles!

In 1999, HBO’s live music show Reverb premiered on the premium cable network with performances from Everlast and Alanis Morissette.

In 1996, Jack Gillis marries Meg White and takes her last name. The couple would go on to form The White Stripes.

And finally in 2012, Green Day’s set was cut short to 25 minutes (compared to the original 45 they were promised) at the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas. This led frontman Billie Joe Armstrong to halt the show and fly off the handle by going into a profanity-laced rant against the festival promotors. It was later revealed that Armstrong, a high-functioning alcoholic, was drunk and didn’t remember what he said. Two days later, he checked into rehab. It still was a pretty punk rock move, so let’s enjoy together:
