Today in Rock History – September 17

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s September 17th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day off in 1967, as The Doors made their first and final appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The band is never invited back after singer Jim Morrison falls back on a promise he made to producers that he would change the lyrics to their song Light My Fire during their performance. Producers said they would “never work The Ed Sullivan Show again!” Morrison replied the now infamous, “Hey, man. We just did the Sullivan show.”

Another band appeared on TV that night as The Who made their US television debut on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The band performed their hit My Generation and finished the song, by well… I think you should just see it for yourself.

In 1992, Frank Zappa performed portions of his classical work The Yellow Shark by conducting The Ensemble Modern in Germany. Zappa would receive a 20 minute standing ovation and this moment would become his final public appearance.

And speaking of Zappa, we got Joe’s Garage Act 1 in 1979!

Other releases include Believe from Disturbed in 2002 and in 1991 we got both No More Tears from Ozzy, Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 from Guns N’ Roses!

We also got THREE albums in 1996: Ænima from Tool, White Light, White Heat, White Trash by Social Distortion, Fashion Nugget by Cake!

In 1976, the Sex Pistols perform in front of a captive audience at the Chelmsford Prison in Essex, England. I feel like there’s a joke in that sentence.

And finally in 1978, Queen began filming segments for the music video for Bicycle Race. The shoot involved a staged bike race involving 65 naked models racing around Wimbledon stadium in England.
