Today in Rock History – August 14

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s August 14th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting off the day with violence, as in 1983, Johnny Ramone fractured his skull after being kicked in the head by Seth Macklin of the band Sub Zero Construction during a fight. Ramone was rushed to the hospital to undergo emergency brain surgery, while Macklin was arrested and charged with assault.

The fantastic documentary It Might Get Loud came out in 2009. It focuses on Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White as they discuss their careers, musical styles and creative processes. A must watch for any guitar nut!

Its Kevin Cadogan of Third Eye Blind’s birthday

We lost Allen Lanier of Blue Oyster Cult in 2013, James Woolley of Nine Inch Nails in 2016, and Dave Williams of Drowning Pool in 2002

The Battle of Brit Pop raged on as rivals Oasis and Blur release singles on the same day in 1995.

In 1974, Neil Peart made his debut with Rush as their new drummer at a show in Pittsburgh

The Foo Fighters made their network TV debut, performing on a 1995 episode of The Late Show with David Letterman.

And finally in 2000, Rage Against The Machine held a free protest concert across from the Staples Center in Los Angeles where the Democratic National Convention was being held. After the show ended, police came in and fired rubber bullets and pepper spray into the crowd to make them disperse.
