Today in Rock History – August 5

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s August 5th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting off with Birthdays, we have Adam Yauch but you may know him better as MCA of the Beastie Boys

Other birthdays include Rick Derringer, Jeff Coffin of the Dave Matthews Band, Eddie “Fingers” Ojeda of Twisted Sister, David Hungate of Toto, and Pat Smear of Nirvana and Foo Fighters

We lost Jeff Porcaro of Toto in 1992. In my opinion one of the most underrated drummers of all time. I mean he sort of created his own shuffle beat with Rosanna! I mean come on! Porcaro himself goes into how he did it HERE, if that’s your sort of thing…

Moving onto releases now, we have 1000HP from Godsmack in 2014, The Stooges self-titled debut in 1969 and The Beatles’ Revolver in 1966!

In the film world, the metal classic Airheads released in 1994. Seriously, if you’ve never seen Airheads before, do yourself a favor and watch it!

American Bandstand premiered on TV in 1957. It would feature many of rocks greatest acts including The Doors, Pink Floyd and R.E.M. as well as introduce the world to artists like Prince, Van Halen and Aerosmith. The show lasted 37 seasons all the way to 1989!

And finally in 1975, we saw the birth of the first all-women rock band, The Runaways with the help of producer Kim Fowley. The band featured the killer lineup of Joan Jett, Sandy West, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, and Cherie Currie but only lasted about four years before each member went their separate ways.
