Today in Rock History – May 13

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s May 13th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

If you thought yesterday was a bit much, today is a LOT slower. So let’s get started.

Starting if off on a fun note, it’s Buckethead’s birthday today

Moving onto releases now, we got both Judas Priest’s Ram It Down and The Black Keys’ Dropout Boogie.

In 1969, Led Zeppelin became the first major British rock band to perform in Hawaii, when they played the Civic Auditorium in Honolulu.

And finally in 1985, the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) holds one of their first meetings inside a Washington church to create support for their agenda to create a ratings system for music and to keep offensive album covers out of view in record stores aka CENSORSHIP. The meeting is attended by about 400 people (most of them high ranking politicians wives) and gains them enough clout to force a Senate hearing that takes place later that year. After hearing testimony from both sides, the “Parental Advisory” label is born. If you wanna see how an artist can make the PMRC look like a bunch of fools, here’s the ever outspoken Frank Zappa’s take on the whole thing.
