Today in Rock History – February 24

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s February 24th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting with releases we are actually celebrating TWO one year anniversaries: Cracker Island by the Gorillaz and Lighting Up the Sky by Godsmack. Also released on this day in 1975 was a little album called Physical Graffiti by a tiny British band named Led Zeppelin. Wonder whatever happened to those guys?

Moving onto birthdays, we have Noah “Wuv” Bernardo of P.O.D., John Nolan of Taking Back Sunday, Keith Wallen of Breaking Benjamin, and #3 Chris Fehn, formerly of Slipknot.

In 2008, a statue depicting the late AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott was unveiled in his hometown Fremantle, Australia.

Then in 2010, the personal assistant to former Ramones manager Linda Stein was convicted in a New York court for second degree murder. Prosecutors stated that Natavia Lowery stole more than $30K from Stein, then proceeded to bludgeon her with a piece of exercise equipment in Stein’s Manhattan apartment in 2007. Jurors reached their verdict in less than a day.

In 1992, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love get married in Waikiki, Hawaii in front of eight guests, including Cobain’s Nirvana bandmate Dave Grohl.

In 2019, members of Queen, with Adam Lambert on vocals, open that years Oscars playing a medley of We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions to celebrate the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. The film went on to win four awards that night.

Was it the greatest performance ever? Not really. Felt really sterile, much like Bohemian Rhapsody. The movie, not the song. The song kicks ass.

Anyways and finally, in 1969, The Jimi Hendrix Experience play their final show in the UK, at London’s Royal Albert Hall. During their encore of Purple Haze and Wild Thing, the stage was rushed by, well, everyone in attendance that night. Fans, cops, bouncers, maybe a concessions guy or two.
