Today in Rock History – March 12

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s March 12th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

So many great albums came out on March 12th, so let’s list them off! Starting off we got Glass Houses from Billy Joel in 1980, Out of Time from R.E.M. in 1991 and La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One from White Zombie just a year later in ’92!

We also got two albums from The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground & Nico in 1967 and The Velvet Underground in ’69. Both are considered some of the greatest albums of all time and feature classic Underground tunes.

Kiss Unplugged was released in 1996. Featuring the original lineup performing together for the first time since Peter Criss left in 1980 and Ace Frehley left in 1983 and the only time that all four performed without their makeup AND the only time Criss and Frehley shared a stage with Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick. This album lead to the original four reuniting for a year long tour.

Oh and we also got Bad Hair Day from Weird Al that same day in 1996.

Phew! Alright let’s move onto birthdays! We have Matthew McDonough of Mudvayne, Graham Coxon of Blur, Ben Kenney of Incubus, and Steve Harris of Iron Maiden!

It’s also a sad day for Maiden fans as we lost drummer Clive Burr in 2013 from multiple sclerosis at the age of 56.

In 2010, over 130 people were arrested outside a Metallica show in Colombia, their first in 11 years, as thousands of ticketless fans tried to gatecrash the show. 1,500 police officers and four tank (yes TANKS!) arrived to help manage the crowds. 8 were hospitalized while property was vandalized and destroyed.

In 2003, The Rolling Stones were set for a tour of China, when the Chinese government gave the band a list of banned songs that they can’t play on the tour. The list includes some pretty big hits including Honkey Tonk Woman and this classic:

In 2007, the 22nd class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were inducted, including R.E.M., Patti Smith and Van Halen!

And finally in 1998, the attorneys for Korn sent a cease-and-desist letter to a Michigan school. Specifically to their assistant principal. The reason why? Because the principal suspended a student for wearing a Korn shirt to school. The band also arranged for their shirts to be given out outside the school.
