Today in Rock History – February 22

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s February 22nd and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting it off with releases and we’ve got Kilroy Was Here from Styx in 1983 and ten years later, we got Pablo Honey from Radiohead in ’93. Now here’s the song that Radiohead hates and will never play live ever again:

Now onto birthdays, we’ve got Scott Phillips of Alter Bridge and Creed… wait, CREED!!!

And it’s also the late Bradley Nowell of Sublime’s birthday!

We lost Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age in 2022.

We also lost artist Andy Warhol in 1987. Known for helping found the pop art movement of the 60’s, Warhol was entwined with the music world by not only managing The Velvet Underground, but creating some of the greatest and most iconic album art of all time for some of the biggest bands of all time! Some examples include the Stones’ Sticky Fingers and the Underground and Nico’s peeled banana.

In 2004, members of Puddle of Mudd walk off stage during a show in Toledo, OH due to lead singer Wes Scantlin being to intoxicated to perform. Wes rambles and sings for another 30 minutes before leaving the stage for his dressing room. He was then arrested for disorderly conduct.

In 2019, Peter Frampton announced his IBM (a degenerative muscular disease) diagnosis and that his next tour would be his last. After the tour, Frampton would make sporadic appearances to perform, but would return to touring in 2023 and be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024 showing that he still has IT.

In 1989, the Grammys introduced their brand new “Heavy Metal” category. The inaugural winner for Best Metal Performance? Jethro Tull. They beat Metallica. But don’t worry, Metallica went on to win a future 7 Best Metal Grammys. But they somehow won for this song over Disturbed and Slipknot this year.

In 1992, The Red Hot Chili Peppers were the musical guests on Saturday Night Live. During the performance of Under the Bridge, guitarist John Frusciante sabotages the song by playing off tempo and screaming into the mic. This would lead to him quitting the band a few months later. Fruscainte would get sober and rejoin the band in 1998.

And finally in 2017, Blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge received the UFO Researcher of the Year Award at the International UFO Congress. ….What? We don’t have to be serious about these ALL the time. Now this song makes more sense.
