Today in Rock History – February 1

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s February 1st and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

We’ve got a very busy day ahead of us! Starting off with a long list of releases, we got Green Day’s Dookie in 1994!

Other releases include: Surrealistic Pillow from Jefferson Airplane in 1967, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits from The Doobie Brothers in 1974, the MC5’s live album Kick Out the Jams in 1969, and Harvest from Neil Young in 1972!

As well as Plastic Letters by Blondie in 1978, Song for America by Kansas in 1975 and the Stray Cats self-titled debut record in 1981!

AND in 1983, we got Journey’s Frontiers, Money and Cigarettes by Eric Clapton and Social Distortion’s Mommy’s Little Monster!

In 2023, Ozzy Osbourne announced his retirement from touring due to health issues brought on by a 2019 accident that caused spinal damage. Ozzy hopes to return to touring in the future.

Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols was released from prison on bail in 1979 after completing a detox program in prison. He would be found dead the next day from a heroin overdose

The Cars broke up in 1988.

Moving onto birthdays now, we have Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers!

Other birthdays include Exene Cervenka of X, Ray Sawyer of Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, Johny Chow of Stone Sour and Ron Welty of The Offspring!

As well as Rich Williams of Kansas, Jimmy Carl Black of The Mothers of Invention, Chuck Dukowski of Black Flag and Patrick Wilson of Weezer!

In 1987, Journey finished what would be their final tour with lead singer Steve Perry.

And finally in 1995, Richey Edwards, guitarist for the Manic Street Preachers, disappeared after leaving London’s Embassy Hotel around 7am that morning, leaving only his packed suitcase in his room. He left no clues to his whereabout. Sixteen days later his car was found outside Bristol, but Edwards never was. He was declared dead in November of 2008.
