Today in Rock History – January 17

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s January 17th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day with birthdays, we have Mick Taylor of The Rolling Stones and the late Jon Wysocki of Staind.

The 11th Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place in 1996. Acts inducted include: Pink Floyd, David Bowie (who skipped the ceremony), The Velvet Underground, and Jefferson Airplane.

We lost Van Conner of the Screaming Trees in 2023 at the age of 55 from pneumonia.

Jason Newsted left Metallica in 2001 after failing to convince the band to take a year off.

And finally, Motley Crue formed in 1981 as bassist Nikki Sixx, drummer Tommy Lee, and singer/guitarist Greg Leon began rehearsing together. Leon would leave after just a few months and the band would eventually gain the final pieces of their legendary lineup, singer Vince Neil and guitarist Mick Mars, not long after.
