Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s January 11th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
In 1964, the Whiskey-a-Go-Go opened its doors on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. The venue would become a vital venue for the Southern California music scene, hosting a variety of artists from The Doors and Frank Zappa to Seattle based groups, like Soundgarden and the Melvins. The venue has gained such a significant status in rock history, that the building itself was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and even has it’s own official TV channel.
With birthdays, we have Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band!
Other birthdays include Tony Kaye of YES and Tom Dumont of No Doubt!
In 1992, Nirvana performs on Saturday Night Live for the first time. The band performed two songs, Territorial Pissings and Smells Like Teen Spirit. The very same day, their album Nevermind hit No.1 on the US album chart.
We lost Mickey Finn of T. Rex in 2003 at the age of 55
With releases, we got both Chicago III from Chicago and Janis Joplin’s Pearl in 1971!
And finally, Day 1 of 10 of the very first Rock in Rio festival took place in 1985. On the bill that night was a very diverse lineup that included AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, and Queen.
