Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s January 10th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
Starting the day on a sad note, as we lost David Bowie in 2016 at the age of 69 from liver cancer.
We also lost Jeff Beck in 2023 at the age of 78 from bacterial meningitis and “Fast” Eddie Clarke of Motorhead in 2018 at the age of 67 from pneumonia.
In 2005, Gene Simmons of KISS got sued for slander by a woman he had a previous relationship with when they were students. The woman, Georgeann Ward, alleged that a VH1 documentary starring Simmons, made her out to be a “sex-crazed nymphomaniac” when Simmons flashed a photo of her when speaking about his past sexual encounters. Gene would claim in the doc that he had done the deed with over 4,000 women in his lifetime up to that point.
We’ve got two releases today, those being New York from Lou Reed in 1989 and The Ramones’ Leave Home in 1977!
We’ve got a huge list of birthdays today and starting us off is Donald Fagen of Steely Dan
Other birthdays include Nick Bockrath of Cage the Elephant, Pat Benatar, Matt Roberts of 3 Doors Down, and Brent Smith of Shinedown
As well as Brad Roberts of Crash Test Dummies, Jim Croce, Aynsley Dunbar of Journey, Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets and Rod Stewart!
And finally, George Harrison quit The Beatles on this day in 1969. The moment was captured during filming of the band’s Let It Be sessions as John Lennon began bashing on the George-penned I Me Mine as Harrison was showing it to the rest of the band. Later on in the day after breaking for lunch, George announced to the band that he’ll “be leaving the band now.” George would return to the group just a few days later after his bandmates respected his wishes of respecting his works and not holding a planned concert.
