Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s December 11th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
Starting the day in 1968, filming for The Rolling Stones’ Rock & Roll Circus concert film took place. The show featured Jethro Tull, The Who, and the one night only supergroup The Dirty Mac. Of course the Stones were the headliners and they kept the show buried for almost 30 years before they released the film.
With releases today, we got Tre from Green Day in 2012, Chris Cornell’s final studio album No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. 1 in 2020, and John Lennon’s solo debut John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band in 1970!
During a 1973 KISS concert in Florida, guitarist Ace Frehley was nearly electrocuted when he touched a short-circuited light. Frehley was carried from the stage but he would return 10 minutes later to finish the show.
Moving into birthdays today we have Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue!
Other birthdays include: Stevie Young of AC/DC, Chad Szeliga of Breaking Benjamin, and Zacky Vengeance of Avenged Sevenfold!
In 1965, The Velvet Underground played their very first show, opening for a local group called The Myddle Class, taking over the auditorium of Summit High School in New Jersey. They play only three songs: There She Goes Again, Heroin, and Venus In Furs.
In 2015, while performing in Berlin, Germany on their 40th Anniversary Tour, Motorhead played what would be their final concert ever. Just a few weeks later on December 28th, lead singer and bassist Lemmy Kilmister died after a short battle with cancer.
And finally in 1981, the Bad Brains played the final show at the historic New York nightclub Max’s Kansas City. The venue hosted many greats including The New Yorks Dolls, The Velvet Underground, and David Bowie. Opening for Bad Brains that night were a group of teenagers from Brooklyn who called themselves The Beastie Boys.
