Today in Rock History – December 10

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s December 10th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day in 2007, as the surviving members of Led Zeppelin reunited for the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London for their first performance in 19 years. The performance would be filmed and recorded for their live album and concert film Celebration Day.

Moving onto releases we got World of Noise from Everclear in 1993 and Queen’s A Day at the Races in 1976!

In 1973, CBGB opened its doors in Manhattan. Originally intended to be a Country, Bluegrass and Blues bar (hence the name), the club would become the Mecca for the American Punk and New Wave scene.

Moving onto birthdays now, we have Meg White of the White Stripes!

Other birthdays include Garth Smith of the Buzzcocks and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr

In 2011, at the last of four 30th anniversary concerts at The Filmore in San Francisco, hell seemed to have frozen over as Metallica was joined on stage by two former members: bassist Ron McGovney and guitarist and Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine.

We lost Rick Danko of The Band in 1999 at the age of 56 from heart failure in his sleep.

While performing the first of a two night stay at London’s Rainbow Theatre in 1971, Frank Zappa was pushed off stage by a jealous boyfriend of an audience member. Zappa would hit the concrete floor in the orchestra pit and many in the band thought he had died. Zappa would luckily survive with some serious injuries, including a fractured skull, that would leave him in a wheelchair for an extended period of time. The injuries from the fall would cause him to stay off the road for half a year.

And finally in 2008, the Associated Press reported that the US Military were using music to “create fear, disorient and prolong capture shock” for the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Among the songs blasted for 24 hours a day include: Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen, The Theme From Sesame Street, Hells Bells from AC/DC and I Love You from Barney. Now it’s time to face the same torment as those prisoners. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!
