Today in Rock History – December 5

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s December 5th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day on a grosser note, as in 1997, at the KROQ Christmas concert, Jane’s Addiction’s Dave Navarro scrawls an encouraging message to Fiona Apple….with his own blood.

Moving onto releases now, we got Band on the Run from Wings in 1973!

Other releases include Black Flag’s Damaged in 1981 and in 2000 we got both Live from Alice in Chains and Renegades from Rage Against the Machine!

It’s Rick Wills of Foreigner’s birthday today!

We lost Denny Laine of Wings in 2023 and in 1993, Gin Blossoms guitarist Doug Hopkins committed suicide at the age of 32. Hopkins, although fired from the band before their debut album released, wrote the biggest hits from that album including Hey Jealousy.

And finally in 1976, journalist Phil Sutcliffe a young drummer from the band Curved Air to see a band from Newcastle, England called Last Exit. After the show Sutcliffe introduced the drummer, Stewart Copeland, to the band’s bass player, Gordon Sumner. Just a few months later, with the addition of guitarist Andy Summers and Sumner’s mononymous name change to Sting, they formed the three piece band The Police.
