Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s December 2nd and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
Starting the day in 2023, as KISS concluded their farewell tour at Madison Square Garden in NYC with the encore performed by the new digital avatars of the group created by Pophouse. Paul Stanley described the choice of becoming avatars as, “The band deserves to live on because the band is bigger than we are.” The new KISS Avatars were met with a mixed reaction from fans, but with how well Pophouse has done with other groups like ABBA, I have high hopes.
In 1973, The Who were sent to jail overnight in Montreal after the band and their companions cause $6,000 worth of damage to their hotel rooms after their show at the Forum.
Birthdays today features: Richard Savage of Def Leppard, Chris Wolstenholme of Muse and Nate Mendel of the Foo Fighters
In 2003, Justin Hawkins of the Darkness was held by police at JFK Airport in New York after being mistaken for a wanted man with the same name and looks. Hawkins was let go after his fiancé and manager Sue Whitehouse proved that Hawkins was in England when the crime took place.
In 1976, the first day of the three day photo shoot for the cover of Pink Floyd’s upcoming album Animals took place at the Battersea Power Station in London. Using a giant inflatable pig attached to ropes between two of the station’s towers, a marksman was hired to shoot the pig down incase it came loose. The marksman was not needed on this day due to poor weather, but the following, well….. More on that tomorrow.
And finally in 2012, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin were awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. The band would be honored that night with performances from the son of late drummer John Bonham, Jason, the Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz and Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Heart stole the show that night with their performance of the Zeppelin classic Stairway to Heaven
