While trying to swerve to avoid hitting a semi trailer in 1971, Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band was thrown from his motorcycle. The bike bounced in the air, pinned Allman, and skidded another 90 feet. The accident killed him at the age of 24.
Moving onto releases now, we got Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Willy and the Poor Boys in 1969!
We also got Famous Last Words from Supertramp in 1982, Being There from Wilco in 1996, and John Lennon’s Mind Games in 1973!
Frank Zappa’s mockumentary musical 200 Motels was released in theaters in 1971
In 1996, Axl Rose announced that Slash was no longer a member of Guns N’ Roses. Slash would go on to form both Slash’s Snakepit and Velvet Revolver.
Moving onto Birthdays today, we have Denny Laine of the Moody Blues and Wings!
We also have James Williamson of The Stooges, Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac and Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend!
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concert took place at Madison Square Garden in 2009 and featured inductees like Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones, Bono of U2, and Bruce Springsteen.
In 1998, Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafra was sued by his bandmates for unpaid royalties. The band would win the case, gaining control of the group’s songs as well as the rights to the band’s name.
And finally in 1991, Metallica launched their massive “Wherever We May Roam” tour in Peoria, IL. The tour runs for 224 shows, wrapping up in December 1992.
