Today in Rock History – September 29

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s September 29th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day with releases, and we got two heavy hitters on this day in 1992: Core from the Stone Temple Pilots…

…and Dirt from Alice in Chains!

We got another Alice in Chains record in 2009 with Black Gives Way to Blue. We also got Cousin from Wilco in 2023 and in 1977 we got this really small time record called The Stranger from Billy Joel. It would go on to become one of the best selling albums of all time!

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was released to video game consoles in 1999. Not only did it introduce millions of people to the world of skateboarding, but it also helped introduce many young ears to new music with it’s ska and punk soundtrack. Artists included Primus, Dead Kennedys and Goldfinger.

And speaking of Primus, it’s Les Claypool birthday!

It’s also Josh Farro of Paramore’s birthday!

In 1994, Oasis took a temporary split during their very first US tour, when Noel Gallagher walked off stage mid-show in Los Angeles after his brother Liam hit Noel over the head with a tambourine. The band would reunite shortly after when Noel was persuaded back and they continued their tour in Minneapolis.

And finally in 1989, while traveling on his motorcycle from L.A., Bruce Springsteen dropped in at Matt’s Saloon in Prescott, Arizona and jammed with the house band The Mile High Band. The Boss played a bunch of rock and roll classics with the band, and a week later, Matt’s bartender Brenda received a $100,000 check from Springsteen to help cover her medical bills. Ah, Springsteen. Always a class act.
