Today in Rock History – September 8

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s September 8th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day off with birthdays, we have Pigpen of the Grateful Dead and Benjamin Orr of The Cars!

Other birthdays include Mick Brown of Dokken, Troy Sanders of Mastodon, Jay Weinberg of Slipknot and Ross Childress of Collective Soul!

Onto releases now, we got The Allman Brothers Band’s Brothers and Sisters in 1973!

We also got the Screaming Trees’ Sweet Oblivion in 1992, Close to the Edge from YES in 1972, Hole’s Celebrity Skin in 1998, and Suffer from Bad Religion in 1988

Led Zeppelin also released their first ever single in 1997, 29 years after the band originally formed. The single was their all time classic Whole Lotta Love.

In 1993, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love appeared on stage together for the very first time. The couple performed at Club Lingerie in Los Angeles and played a song they co-wrote Pennyroyal Tea.

Iron Maiden lead singer Bruce Dickinson became a licensed airline pilot in 2002.

And finally in 1994, the first ever VMA intrusion took place at that year’s MTV Video Music Awards, as MCA of the Beastie Boys, dressed as his character Nathanial Hornblower, rushed the stage when R.E.M. won the award for Best Direction for their video Everybody Hurts against Beastie’s video for Sabotage. MCA was promptly rushed offstage after stating that he, “dreamed that Spike (Jonze) would win this.” Ah the 90’s, how we miss you.
