Today in Rock History – August 10

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s August 10th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting today off strong with releases! We got the Red Hot Chili Peppers debut record in 1984, Weasels Ripped My Flesh from The Mothers of Invention in 1970 and Siren Song of the Counter Culture from Rise Against in 2004

Moving onto birthdays now, we have Todd Nichols of Toad The Wet Sprocket and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull!

We also had the birth of inventor Leo Fender, and if you can’t guess what he was known for, the inventor of the Fender guitar. Although not a guitarist himself, Fender helped design many iconic guitars like the Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster which would be played by many of the guitar gods we worship today like Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn among many, MANY others!

In 1999, Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs quits Oasis after finishing work on the groups newest album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.

In 2012, members of KISS and Motley Crue come together to donate $100,000 to the families of the victims of the “Dark Knight” shooting in Aurora, Colorado which occurred on July 20th at a movie theater showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

In 1997, Selena Peart, the 19-year-old daughter of Rush drummer Neil Peart, died in a car accident. A year later Peart’s wife died of cancer. These events led to Peart going on sabbatical from the group to ride his motorcycle across North America.

We lost Isaac Hayes in 2008. Some may know Hayes for his musical works, but many of you will know him for his voice acting work as Chef from South Park. Since I’ve been told no more South Park for these blogs, I’m gonna just put the Theme from Shaft here for you to enjoy….

And finally in 2012, to lighten things up a bit, the Insane Clown Posse announced at their annual Gathering of the Juggalos that they would be suing the FBI! The reason why was because the FBI listed the band’s fans, the Juggalos, as a criminal gang on their 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment Report. The lawsuit never went anywhere and the Juggalos were still listed on the FBI’s list of gangs the following years. Since ICP is also a no-no for the blogs, here’s a clown singing about clowns.
