Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s February 13th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
Starting with releases we have Clairvoyance by Screaming Trees (1986) and Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut record (1970), which was fittingly released on Friday the 13th.
Moving onto birthdays now, its Henry Rollins formerly of Black Flag’s birthday, as well as Derek Riggs, the artist behind Iron Maiden’s album art and the creator of the band’s mascot, Eddie!
Moving on now to 1960 as we saw the launch of Reprise Records. They continue on today after a brief dormant period in the late 70’s-early 80’s. Acts currently signed with Reprise include Green Day, Disturbed and My Chemical Romance
Then in 1982, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon hits 402 weeks in the Billboard Top 200 Album charts.
Also in 1982, thieves stole the 300-pound headstone from the grave of Lynyrd Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant in Orange Park, Florida. Police found the stone two weeks later in a dried up river bed.
And finally in 1980, police raided the home of former Sex Pistol, Johnny Rotten (John Lydon). Rotten greeted the police holding a sword. The only illegal item Rotten had was a canister of tear gas. He claimed it was to defend against intruders.
