We’ll have to wait until Feb. 28 to find out if Matt Damon wins the Academy Award for best actor in “The Martian” or the film itself wins for best picture, but until then we can give a creative marketing award to those who sell potatoes.
Albert Bartlett Potatoes is using the film with its potato tie-in to market its Rooster line of potatoes, including a now-closed contest to send someone to the Kennedy Space Center. According to photos floating around social media, grocery stores are jumping in as well, cleverly positioning “The Martian” DVDs in the produce aisle next to the potatoes.
If you aren’t familiar with the movie, you may not understand the connection. In the film, Damon’s character is stranded on Mars, and he has to survive until someone comes to save him — but it will take four years for another mission to reach him. In his character’s words, has has to “figure out how to make water and grow food on a planet where nothing grows.”
His food supply is limited, but he has potatoes, and he figures out how to use his already existing potatoes to grow more potatoes. When the rest of his food supply runs out, his diet consists of nothing but spuds.
